Cantona doubts Glazer
Eric Cantona doubts that Manchester United’s new owner can drastically change the team.
Cantona, one of United’s former shining stars, doubts that new owner Malcolm Glazer can change the team in the same way Roman Abramovich was able to do so with Chelsea.
“Manchester United is not Abramovich’s Chelsea,” the now retired French striker told reporters. “They don’t need one man. United are stronger than anyone in the world.”
Many Manchester United fans were upset when Malcolm Glazer, the US tycoon and owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, became the club’s majority shareholder, forcing remaining share holders to sell their stock.
Issues at the heart of the Glazer takeover that have concerned loyal fans include the club being used to offload the businessman’s debts, along with increased ticket prices and a lack of revenue available for attracting more top name players to the club.
Cantona echoed the fans’ criticisms of the Glazer Foundation, arguing that the American was only interested in business and marketing, caring little for the sport.
“They don’t care about him. They don’t need him. They don’t need anybody,” Cantona said. “I hope United do not lose the strong identity and philosophy of the club,” he said of his former club. “I will be very sad if they lose it.”
Cantona was speaking at a news conference to launch a Manchester United soccer school program in Hong Kong. United recently played the Hong Kong national team in a friendly on the 23rd July, winning the game comfortably 2 – 0.
