Takeover shadow puts football share values in the Sun

Malcolm Glazer and Roman Abramovich are reinvigorating a boom in Premiership football club stocks, with Tottenham and Arsenal’s share performances leading the way.

Arsenal shares have tripled in the past three year, largely due to the club’s great success in recent years under Wenger. They have also outperformed the FTSE and leisure sectors as of late, and are up by more than 150 per cent since the beginning of the last season.

In the face of exponential increase in player wages and transfer fees, many football investors were left burned by the industry they loved so much since the original floatation of clubs in the early 90s.

Share prices for English football clubs remaining on the stockmarket have boomed recently. Although Chelsea are now owned by Abramovich and Man Utd by Glazer, many large clubs are still floating, including Newcastle United, who were recently the speculation of a takeover attempt themselves.

Tottenham Hotspur shares are up by nearly over 50 per cent in the past year, while just across London, Charlton shares are up 24 per cent in the past year, having nearly doubled in the past three years.

Midland-based clubs Aston Villa and Birmingham City have also seen their share prices fly up by between 30 per cent and 50 per cent in the past year.

Despite this renaissance in value, football club shares still remain the investment choice of die-hard supporters, rather than serious investors.
